The West Indian Connection Dowies also occur in Jamaica. How Dowies first came is not known; What they did, However, there are Dowies in the Jamaican Old Parish Registers dating from 9/1/1734 when the death of Thomas Dowie, "A Free Negro man." is recorded, no parents names were given. ( 1 Port Royal Register, # 141 ) Later records record Dowies there as " Mullatta" and "Free Black". A Thomas William Dowie was a Licensed Nautical Pilot for the Port of Kingston, Jamaica, between 1882 - 1908, from whom descendents now live in North America. |
